When a linear encoder begins to misread or stop working, contamination is one possibility, but it is not the only one. HEIDENHAIN notes that dust, grease, oil, and water can build up on a scale or scanning head, even in designs made to tolerate contamination. A quick external wipe may not address an internal fault, and opening or adjusting a precision encoder without the right equipment can make matters worse.
