What a DRO does
A digital readout displays the position measured by scales on a mill or lathe. The machinist still moves the axes manually. A DRO can make positioning and repeat work easier without converting the machine into a programmable control.
What CNC adds
A CNC control runs programmed tool paths and commands machine motion through the machine's drives. A retrofit is a larger project: drives, motors, wiring, safety and machine condition all need review. A DRO alone does not automate feed or interpolation.
Which path fits?
For a manual knee mill needing easier position readout, start with a properly sized ACU-RITE DRO package. If you need conversational programming or automated cuts, discuss a CNC-capable solution and your machine's retrofit scope.
