How to Choose a Linear Encoder

FIELD GUIDE · POSITION FEEDBACK

Choose the encoder around the machine

Before comparing part numbers, define the environment, required travel and the controller's input. A similar-looking scale may not be electrically or mechanically compatible.

Five checks before choosing

  1. Environment: sealed encoders protect against chips, dust and splash; exposed designs suit applications needing very high precision and no mechanical contact between scanning head and scale.
  2. Measuring length: check actual axis travel and space for the scale and cable path.
  3. Signal and control: match the controller's supported interface, resolution and reference/absolute position requirements.
  4. Mounting: measure brackets, clearance and alignment, especially for a retrofit.
  5. Application: speed, accuracy and contamination exposure affect the choice. Confirm each specification against the current manufacturer's data sheet.

HEIDENHAIN explains the difference between sealed and exposed linear encoders. If you are replacing a failed scale, send its complete ID number, connector photo and machine details rather than choosing by series alone. Our repair hub may offer another path.
