HEIDENHAIN LIC 4100 FS Absolute Linear Encoders

HEIDENHAIN LIC 4100 FS Absolute Linear Encoders

The HEIDENHAIN LIC 4100 FS series is an exposed absolute linear encoder for safety-related linear axes. A scanning head reads a steel scale tape with absolute and incremental METALLUR tracks. The safety-related configuration includes functional safety and a failsafe mechanical connection; the head, scale, mounting and downstream electronics must be selected and installed as a matched system.

Technical Data

  • Safety-related configuration: LIC 4119 with LIC 4009 scale tape and an FS scanning head
  • Measuring standard: steel scale tape, adhesively bonded to an aluminum or steel mounting surface
  • Interface: EnDat 2.2, ordering designation EnDat22
  • Measuring steps: 10 nm, 5 nm or 1 nm
  • Accuracy grades: ±3 µm up to 1020 mm; ±15 µm, with ±5 µm possible after linear-error compensation in the downstream electronics
  • Typical baseline error: no more than ±0.750 µm per 50 mm
  • Interpolation error: ±20 nm
  • Traversing speed: up to 600 m/min, subject to interface and system conditions
  • Supply voltage: 3.6 V to 14 V DC
  • Typical current: 75 mA at 5 V without load
  • Connection: 1 m or 3 m cable with an 8-pin M12 coupling or 15-pin D-sub connector
  • Maximum cable length: 100 m with the specified cable and clock frequency no higher than 8 MHz
  • Scanning-head operating temperature: -10 °C to 70 °C; scale length limits depend on operating temperature and mounting surface
  • Relative humidity: up to 93% under the stated test conditions, with condensation excluded
  • Scanning-head mass: up to 18 g without cable

Functional safety and selection

The specified FS configuration is intended for applications up to SIL 2 under EN 61508 and Category 3, PL d under EN ISO 13849-1:2015. These are application limits, not a guarantee that an assembled machine meets them. The specified encoder safe position is ±550 µm, with a safety-relevant measuring step of 220 µm. These safety values are separate from the normal 1 nm measuring step.

Fault exclusions for loosening of the head and scale depend on the specified mechanical installation. Confirm the exact FS head and scale IDs, measuring length, mounting surface, temperature range, connection and downstream safety requirements before selecting a replacement. A standard non-FS LIC 4100 part is not automatically interchangeable with an FS configuration.
