The HEIDENHAIN VM 101 is an exposed incremental linear encoder with very high measuring accuracy, used mainly as a reference measuring system for calibrating small machine tools. It also suits position-error checks on cross tables (for example PCB drilling machines) and testing equipment. The scanning unit runs along the scale without mechanical contact. The set consists of a stainless steel U-beam scale carrier with a precision phase-grating scale protected by a glass lamella, the scanning unit, an auxiliary carriage for set-up and the APE 101 interface electronics, which produces two sinusoidal output signals with a 4 µm signal period. Measuring steps as small as 0.02 µm are possible.
