HEIDENHAIN LIF 400 V Vacuum Incremental Linear Encoders

HEIDENHAIN LIF 400 V Vacuum Incremental Linear Encoders

The HEIDENHAIN LIF 400 V series is an exposed incremental linear encoder for high-vacuum applications. LIF 471V provides TTL signals; LIF 481V provides 1 VPP signals. Both use an LIF 401 R scale with SUPRADUR phase grating. Integrated homing and limit tracks support referencing and end-position detection.

Technical Data

  • Vacuum models: LIF 471V (TTL) and LIF 481V (1 VPP)
  • Scale: LIF 401 R; SUPRADUR phase grating on Zerodur glass ceramic or glass; 8 µm grating period
  • Accuracy grade: ±3 µm
  • Baseline error: no more than ±0.225 µm per 5 mm
  • Measuring lengths: selected lengths from 70 mm to 1640 mm
  • Reference mark: one at the midpoint of the measuring length
  • Analog signal period: 4 µm for LIF 481V
  • TTL signal periods: 0.8, 0.4, 0.2, 0.08 or 0.04 µm, depending on the LIF 471V interpolation option
  • Measuring steps: applications down to 2 nm, subject to interface and downstream electronics
  • Traversing speed: up to 240 m/min for 1 VPP; TTL limits range from 3 to 120 m/min depending on interpolation and scanning frequency
  • TTL referencing speed: maximum 9.6 m/min (40 kHz)
  • Analog interpolation error: ±12 nm
  • Analog RMS position noise: 0.6 nm at a 1 MHz cutoff frequency of the subsequent electronics
  • Supply voltage: 5 V DC ±0.25 V
  • Current: less than 150 mA for 1 VPP; less than 165 mA for TTL, without load
  • Operating temperature: 0 °C to 50 °C
  • Bake-out temperature: 100 °C for the V variants
  • Maximum cable length: 30 m for incremental signals; 10 m for homing and limit signals, with the specified cable
  • Scanning-head mass: 9 g

Vacuum configuration

The vacuum-compatible variants include air vents, specialized cleaning and packaging, and a cable with PTFE insulation and tin-plated copper braiding. The high-vacuum V variants are offered with interface electronics either inside or outside the vacuum. Confirm the feed-through, connector and cable arrangement for the installation. For low outgassing, the product information recommends baking at 100 °C for 48 hours under high-vacuum conditions.

The related LIF 481U is an ultrahigh-vacuum variant with a 120 °C bake-out limit and interface electronics outside the ultrahigh vacuum. Its vacuum-side encoder must not contain electronic components such as signal converters. Do not substitute the V variant for a U configuration without checking the vacuum requirements. Bake-out temperatures are not continuous operating temperatures.
